Why doesn't my ipod have a countown timer?

I bought an ipod touch (newest generation) and it doesn't have a countdown timer for my tracks when I'm listening to music. It doesn't tell me where I am in the song, time-wise, and there is no scroll bar to allow me to jump from one part of the track to another. I've tried tweaking my settings with no luck. My friend's iphone has that feature. What the hell?
