Is this blood pressure dangerous for my age?
Optimal BP is < or = 120/80. Up to 140/90 is referred to as pre-hypertension. Your BP is elevated and is considerred stage 1 hypertension (SBP 140-159, DBP 90-99). This is abnormal for someone you age and may be related to your family history. You should see a doctor and have lab work done (electrolytes, BUN/Cr, lipids, TSH) as well as an ECG. As it is only mildly elevated, I would not recommend medication at this time. What you should do is lose that extra 25 pounds, do aerobic exercise 30 minutes a day 4-5 x per week (like brisk walking, treadmill, cycline NOT weight lifting), limit salt, alcohol, and caffeine intake. Also stop taking any over the counter diet pills or stimulants (if you are taking these that is). If in 2-3 months of doing this your BP is still high then you should take medication.
